TRADITIONAL YAPESE BASKETS

Women's Pandana Basket takes several weeks to make and a lot of step to do.

From Start to Finish:

Basket for a girl or a woman:

1) Get right pandana tree leaves

2) Boiled the leaves and let them dry on sun

3) Weave inside part

4) Weave outside part

Almost done...

5) Decorate edges

6) Make handle/s

7) Make button

Every Yapese basket for a girl has at least one valet and for adult has small parts/valets/containers

Basket for a man:

1) Get 8 young coconut fronts from “green” coconut tree

2) Cut them in half

3) Boiled the parts

3) Dry under shelter/wind drying

4) Prepare /clean up with a shell or finger nail

5) Weave 4 left parts together and 4 right parts together

6) Weave left and after right side to a basket

7) Make handle
